The Manong Generation
“Manong” is an Ilocano (Philippine dialect) word meaning “older brother.”
The “Manongs” were the generation of Filipinos who began to arrive in the United States in the 1920’s. They came to partake of the opportunities they thought America offered. But because of their race, they were denied these and discriminatory laws made it hard to improve their lives.
